IX Tarragona International Environmental Law Colloquium (TIEC) 6 and 7 June 2024

As the world confronts unprecedented environmental crises and grapples with the transition towards more sustainable economies, the welfare of the workforce stands intrinsically linked to the health of the planet. The urgency to comprehend, analyse, and address the legal, social, political, and economic facets of this interplay has never been more pronounced.

This year's colloquium will foster an intellectual exchange and multidisciplinary dialogue, facilitating a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities that arise at the intersection of environmental protection and labour rights (health and safety both inside and outside the workplace, right to a decent work, fight against environmental degradation through labour law, right to develop green skills, green collective bargaining, green social protection, etc.). To that end the IX Tarragona International Environmental Law Colloquium (TIEC) aims to explore the critical nexus of Legal Challenges at the Intersection of the Environmental and Employment Realms " by focusing on three tracks/themes - legal perspectives, key stakeholders, and future challenges.

We encourage authors to submit abstracts that address one of the following topics:

  • The Environmental and Labour Encounters from a Legal Perspective track focuses on the intricate web of legal frameworks governing the relationship between environmental protection and labour. We invite abstracts that critically analyse existing legislation, jurisprudence, legal doctrine, and practices that address the nexus between environmental challenges and labour rights. Contributors are encouraged to explore case studies, comparative analyses, and innovative legal approaches that elucidate the complexities of this interface, also, going further and proposing solutions to trilemmas such as eco-labour synergies and indigenous communities, environmental justice from a eco-labour perspective, etc.
  • The Key stakeholders in Environmental Protection in the Labour Market and Best Practices track seeks abstracts that shed light on the diverse actors whose practices influence environmental protection within the labour market. From governments and trade unions to businesses, multinational companies, NGOs, and individuals, this track aims to unpack the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders in promoting sustainable work practices. We welcome contributions that examine collaborations, conflicts, and synergies among these actors, as well as best practices that enhance the potential for transformative partnerships.
  • The Future Challenges in Labour Environmental Protection track will delve into the future of the environmental-labour Law dynamic. Abstracts in this track should explore emerging challenges, trends, and scenarios that will shape the future intersection of environmental protection and the world of work. This includes discussions on green-technological advancements, climate adaptation strategies at the workplace, and potential ecocentric legal reforms. We encourage innovative and speculative contributions that envision a harmonious future for both workers and the planet.

The IX TIEC aims to provide a forum for junior and early-career researchers with different backgrounds to present and discuss their research and work-in-progress. This event seeks to create a friendly environment for meeting fellow students and colleagues that share a common interest in environmental and labour law.

The IX TIEC Organizing Committee invites the submission of abstracts to be considered for oral and poster presentation at the Colloquium. The IX TIEC is intended to take place in-person, but virtual attendees are welcome. Nevertheless, those submitting a poster can only do so in person.

The main language of the IX TIEC is English. However, panelists are invited to both submit their abstracts and present their works either in English or in Spanish. If accepted, those presenting their work in Spanish are kindly asked to prepare their PowerPoint presentation in English so all attendants will be able to follow and join the discussion.

Those interested in presenting their proposals should submit an abstract of no more than 300 words here. Longer abstracts will not be accepted.

Deadline for abstract submission: 19 January 2024 (included).

Please, submit your abstract here. For further information, please contact TIEC Organizing Committee (tiec(ELIMINAR)@urv.cat).

Join us in Tarragona to catalyse transformative discussions and collectively chart a course towards a sustainable future for both workers and the planet!

The IX Tarragona International Environmental Law Colloquium (TIEC) jointly organized by the Tarragona Centre for Environmental Law Studies (CEDAT-URV) and the Tarragona Environmental Law Students Association (AAEDAT) will be held on 6 and 7 June 2024. This hybrid event is organized as an activity carried out by the Faculty of Legal Sciences (Department of Public Law) of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain). Please, find more information on past editions here.

The CEDAT has gradually become a reference point for Environmental Law in Spain and Europe. Its objectives are to generate and socialize knowledge in the field of environmental law.

The AAEDAT is an association founded in 2009 by students and ex-students of the LL.M. of environmental law in Rovira i Virgili University. It promotes activities within the university community in order to further environmental and social values and create spaces for debate, reflection and exchange with other universities and research groups.

The IX TIEC aims to provide a forum for junior and early-career researchers with different backgrounds in which to present and discuss their research and works-in-progress. In addition, this event seeks to create a friendly environment for meeting fellow students and colleagues that share a common interest for environmental law.

The IX TIEC will be a hybrid event. Nevertheless, we encourage in-person participation to allow a better discussion and networking.

We welcome Aurora members to participate in the Call for Abstracts and to join this event in person. Check with your home institution for any mobility funding opportunities available.

This colloquium is carried out with the support of the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia (AGAUR).
